The MYTH about the AIDS needle at raves

I posted a response in raveme’s ask because of a comment we got. Personally, I HATE this myth because it was used as anti-rave propaganda in my health class. I think this kind of misinformation is abhorant. Anyways - here’s what I say:
The urban legend of needle pokes at raves is one of the oldest in the country. I’ve heard it multiple ways - at a club, at a rave, at a house party. Some of them take place in vegas, phoenix, all over the US. I’ve heard so many versions. The ending is often the same, some poor chap with a needle in his arm saying “Welcome to the AIDS family”
Besides the fact that this myth is completely ridiculous (especially for raves - PLUR and security mean nothing apparently) but it’s also NOT EVEN THE REAL MYTH. The original urban legend started in the AIDS scare back in the early 1980s and before. Some wayward husband or businessman gets a little too frisky at a club. He and his new “lady friend” find their way to a hotel room and spend a, cough, romantic evening together. He wakes up the next morning, his mistress gone, and in lipstick written on the mirror is Welcome to the AIDS family!
If you read any literature on this, talk to any other the local or urban folklore experts (or use common sense), you’ll be quick to realize that this myth is just that…. a myth. Many even suggest its a variation of 1960s “kidney thief” urban legend.
Personally i think raves are safer than house parties even. AT house parties people drink. Drinking often leads to lowered inhibitions and sometimes violence. The people under the influence at raves are most likely on e, a drug that makes you extremely happy and nonviolent. Raves have security, that pat you down and prevent trouble. Anyone can show up to a house party. They can be a rapist, they can bring weapons, they could be dangerous. At raves, a majority of the people believe in PLUR and will help you out, look out for you, and even check to make sure youre okay when youre sitting alone. But aside from any personal viewpoints, the “poking” is a myth.
Anyways, she said “glitterbuggg needs to be a fucking rave professor she knows everything you need to know about raving lol<3<3” which basically made my night.
I LOVE YOU RAVEME <3 <3
